We had a terrific time visiting Purina Farms on Thursday, and exploring all of the areas to see! I hope that you've had a chance to enjoy our pictures...if not, please look for them below this post!
*On Monday, our April book order is due in class or online, if you wish to order.
*Please send in eggs for our egg hunt by Tuesday, so that I can get our final count and data sheet ready for our hunt on Wednesday. This is a math lesson that's LOTS of fun! I will be emailing helpers who signed up, to be sure that our after lunch time will work for you. Helpers will help hide eggs, and help the children as they hunt for eggs. Thank you to all who have sent eggs in already!

We are working on new reading strategies for decoding words! We already know how (1) to use pictures to think about what the words might say and (2) to get our mouth ready for the first sound in a word. As we read higher level books, we're working on (3) make sure the ending sound of the word matches and (4) look for small chunks that you know. Sometimes we even (5) skip the word and read the rest of the sentence, then go back to see what the unknown word is!
Each day, we practice the books in our book bag before we read books in our reading group, or in other places in the room. We are continuing to build our fluency and expression. At home, please keep reading and writing titles down in your reading log. If you haven't set an April goal yet, please do so.

This week, we'll be learning about persuasive writing to convince others to do something. There are lots of fun books that we'll read together, such as I Wanna Iguana, Earrings, and Click, Clack, Moo, Cows That Type. With opinion writing, you have to explain why you like/dislike something. We'll do the same thing with persuasive writing when we explain why others should do something. At this time of year, the focus is on getting children to expand their thinking and their writing beyond a simple sentence. The Peeps are showing so much growth, and I couldn't be prouder!
We've continued practicing our problem solving skills, graphing, and recording data. During the last weeks of April, we'll learn all about measurement, and apply our addition and subtraction skills when we compare measurements!

We've classified animals according to where we can find them (on a farm, in a jungle, etc.) this week. The Peeps have also learned all about different animals that hatch from eggs! In Junior Achievement lessons with Mrs. Berra each Tuesday, the Peeps are learning about making decisions, and wants and needs. We feel very lucky that she will be able to join us for three more weeks of Junior Achievement this year!
