Weekly Report

Spring has sprung in Kindergarten! The Peeps are showing me each and every day how much they've learned and how far they've come! I couldn't be prouder! Be sure to check out our egg hunt pictures. We had a beautiful sunny day for finding eggs! Thank you so much for sending those in for our special day!

Field Day is coming! On May 19th, Coach Luna and Coach Small are looking for parent volunteers to help classes travel from place to place, while teachers man the various stations. If you would like to help, please click here to sign up.  You would be with the Peeps, and there are several time frames to choose from. (I would love to have several volunteers to help--in Kindergarten, we need all of the help we can get!) Thank you!

It's not too late to sign up to be a zoo chaperone on May 11! Sign up here if you're interested. (There's no pressure, because I have enough with 11. This is just a fun trip, and if you'd like to come, we'd love to have you!)

We started taking individual online reading tests for a very exciting new program! Myon is a website with a HUGE selection of books for children to read. We will be able to read (or listen) to these books on our classroom iPads, or teacher computer. Please keep an eye out for your child's login information. I will be sending home user names and passwords, so that you can use the program at home if you'd like. (This is a schoolwide program, so if you have other children at Long, they may be able to tell you about it, too!)

As we've been writing opinion and persuasive pieces, we've been talking about the differences between them. When you explain your opinion, you're not trying to change someone's mind, or get them to do something. You're just explaining why you feel the way you do. When you're being persuasive, you're trying to change something. It can be just one person, or a group of people, or even the whole world--but you're trying to make something change. These are big concepts for Kindergarten! I'm very proud of what the Peeps can do! Please look for their writing coming home this week, along with 4th quarter progress reports.

This week, we created eggs with different characteristics, and made our own graphs! The boys and girls showed so much understanding of how graphs work! We've been problem solving to see what combinations of numbers we can use to reach a specific amount. As they work, the children are getting more fluent with math facts! At home you can help by practicing simple facts with your child (addition facts with any number +0, any number +1, any number +2; then try -0, -1, and -2 problems).

Our next topic of study is plants! We'll be digging into Jack and the Beanstalk this week, creating our own beanstalks, and planting grass!
