Weekly Report

We've had another great week in kindergarten! Believe it or not, one of my very favorite parts of the week were the days when we had indoor morning recess due to the rain. During that time, we had extra-long center time for recess, and the children really took the opportunity to get to know one another better as they played. They were amazing to watch...sharing, talking nicely together, thinking of terrific plans for playing house, or creating structures! I hope that your child is able to tell you about his/her new friends in our classroom!

During reading workshop this week, we started another "bend" in our "We Are Readers" unit. We learned all about storytelling, and what readers do when retelling a story that they know. For these lessons, we used stories that we've already read a lot...like Bark, George, Pete the Cat, The Three Little Pigs and No David! At home you can help your child develop as a storyteller by letting him/her "read" the books that you've read often. It's OK if the words don't match, as long as the story matches the picture on the page. We're working on using our reading voice, making the story match the pictures, and enjoying good stories together!

*If you haven't set a reading goal for the month of September, please do that with your child. Talk together about how many books you think you can read. Remember, whether or not you meet your goal isn't as important as the discussions you have with your child about it. Sometimes goals are easy to meet, and sometimes they aren't. There's a lot of learning that happens with the goal-setting process!

This week during writing workshop times, we've focused on drawing to share an idea. We think of a story first, then draw that story. The Peeps have learned how to manage their folders and materials during writer's workshop, how to work quietly so that everyone can concentrate, and how to listen carefully when a friend shares a story. I am excited at the way I see so many children trying to apply things we're learning in our mini-lessons, like including a background in the story! They are working hard!

"Around a tree, around a tree, that's the way you make a 3!" Number 3 is a very tricky number to write, and it was a focus for us this week. We've learned about ways to show three, including making three on a ten frame, showing three jumps on a number line, rainbow writing the number three, and more! We learned all about triangles this week also, and sorted objects by their properties (shape, color, and size). We used plastic bears and attribute links to sort, and the Peeps practiced sorting and describing how they sorted.

Being proactive is habit #1 of the Seven Habits For Happy Kids! When the third little pig took his time making a brick house, he did that because he knew he'd need his house to be strong! He was being proactive, so that when the Big Bad Wolf came along, he'd be ready! This week in our social studies lessons, we read several different versions of the Three Little Pigs, including Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark, and The Three Ninja Pigs. We practiced our cutting skills by making houses of straw, sticks, and bricks. (Those will come home soon.) We also finished our School Rules books, and those went home on Friday. Feel free to read them together with your child--they can count on the reading log!
