Weekly Report

Happy Lunar New Year! This is the Year of the Rooster! We've had a great time this year reading stories about Chinese New Year, and planning for our New Year parade today!

*Next Tuesday is the 100th day of school! Please be sure to have your child wear his/her 100 day shirt. We will have a fashion show, and other special activities!

*February book orders are coming home today for those who wish to order. I'll collect those in class or online by Friday, February 3, so that holiday books arrive in time for Valentine's Day.

*Upcoming field trips:

February reading logs will be coming home on Wednesday! Please look at your January goal with your child and see if you've reached it. Please continue to practice our sight words so we know them in a "snap!" Even when your child knows the words, a quick review a few times a week really helps s recognize those words quickly when we read.

We've used quite a bit of our Writing Workshop time this week working on our Chinese lion masks. We've built that common experience so that we could break down the steps for "How To" writing. "How To" books are fun to read and to write!

We're adding numbers and writing equations! I'm very excited that some of the Peeps know quite a few addition facts already! They can remember number combinations from our work with composing and decomposing numbers. So adding the "+" and "=" signs is easy and fun!

We've enjoyed lots of stories about "The Great Race," where the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac raced across the river. See if your Peep can tell you why there's no "Year of the Cat." We've read the story of The Five Chinese Brothers, and Er Lang and the Suns. Those are both folktales where the characters have some pretty amazing abilities! We also read Sam and the Lucky Money, about a boy who was trying hard to decide how to spend his lucky new year money. He decided to help a man who had no shoes. After reading the story, the Peeps were excited to get their own red envelopes with lucky money!
