This week, we collected coins each day for the book fair. The children were very interested in them, so we spent some time studying the different types of coins. We looked at them with our hand lenses, we noticed which ones have smooth edges (pennies, nickels), and which have ridges (dimes, quarters). We put the pennies into 10-frame formation, so that we could count them by 10's! We even practiced flipping and spinning coins!
(Our box of money at the end of the week was SO heavy!)
I told the children that coin collections can be lots of fun! Did you know that there were special Lincoln pennies that were made in 2009? Pennies these days have a shield on the "tail" side, but older pennies have the Lincoln Memorial on them! Still older pennies have "one cent" on the back. There were special Lewis and Clark nickels a few years ago, too. There are even some buffalo nickels. Regular nickels just have Monticello (President Jefferson's home) on the back. Of course there are many fancy quarters. The only coin that hasn't changed in a while is the dime. At home, encourage your child to explore coins, and notice how they are the same and different. We will be working with money more at times throughout the year.
